How to turn on a boiler

🔧 1. Check the basics first

  • Make sure the power supply is on (wall switch or fused spur near the boiler).
  • Ensure gas supply is on (if it’s a gas boiler).
  • Check that the pressure gauge is in the normal range (usually 1–1.5 bar when cold).

🔘 2. Turn on the boiler

Most boilers have:

  • A power button or switch → turn it ON
  • A control panel or dial → set to heating or hot water

If you have a thermostat:

  • Turn the room thermostat up so it calls for heat.

If you have a programmer/timer:

  • Set it to “ON” or “AUTO” with the correct time.

🔥 3. Ignite (if needed)

  • Modern boilers ignite automatically.
  • Older boilers may require pressing a pilot light or ignition button.

🌡️ 4. Set temperature

  • Heating: usually 60–75°C
  • Hot water: around 50–60°C

⚠️ 5. If it doesn’t start

  • Check for an error code on the display.
  • Press the reset button (only once or twice).
  • Make sure pressure isn’t too low (below ~1 bar).

🚫 Safety tips

  • If you smell gas → do NOT turn anything on, leave the house, and call emergency services.
  • Don’t open the boiler casing unless you’re qualified.
  • If unsure, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer (required in the UK).
