How to fix a leaky tap

1. Turn off the water supply
Look under the sink for isolation valves and turn them off. If you can’t find them, turn off the main water supply.

2. Plug the drain
Use a plug or cloth so you don’t lose small parts down the sink.

3. Remove the tap handle

  • Look for a screw (sometimes hidden under a cap).
  • Unscrew it and lift off the handle.

4. Take apart the tap

  • Use your spanner to loosen the nut holding the tap together.
  • Carefully remove the internal parts.

5. Replace the faulty part

  • Compression taps (traditional): Replace the rubber washer at the bottom.
  • Modern mixer taps: Replace the ceramic cartridge instead.

6. Reassemble the tap
Put everything back in the reverse order, tightening gently but firmly.

7. Turn water back on and test
Slowly turn the water back on and check for leaks.
