What to do if a pipe bursts

A burst pipe is one of those “act fast” situations—the quicker you act, the less damage you’ll have to deal with.

🚨 Immediate steps (do these first)

1. Shut off the water supply

  • Turn off your internal stopcock (usually under the sink or in a cupboard).
  • If you can’t find it, use the outside valve.

2. Turn off heating and hot water

  • Switch off your boiler to prevent further pressure or damage.

3. Drain the system

  • Turn on all cold taps.
  • Flush toilets to empty remaining water from the pipes.

💧 Minimise damage

4. Contain the leak

  • Use buckets, towels, or anything absorbent.
  • Move valuables and furniture away from the area.

5. Switch off electricity if needed

  • If water is near sockets or wiring, turn off power at the fuse box (only if safe to do so).

🛠️ Temporary fixes (if you need to slow the leak)

  • Wrap the pipe tightly with a towel, cloth, or tape.
  • Use a pipe repair clamp or epoxy putty if you have one.
  • Even a temporary wrap can reduce water flow until help arrives.

👨‍🔧 Call a professional

A burst pipe usually needs proper repair or replacement. Contact a plumber as soon as possible—especially if:

  • The split is large
  • It’s inside a wall or ceiling
  • You can’t fully stop the leak

❄️ If it burst due to freezing

Once things are under control:

  • Improve insulation on exposed pipes
  • Keep heating on low during cold weather
  • Open cupboard doors to let warm air circulate

⚠️ Common mistake to avoid

Don’t just turn the water back on without fixing the pipe—you’ll end up with another flood.
